NEW! Ocean Science and Technology Camp

Be part of a USM Gulf Research Expedition

The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Ocean Science and Engineering is offering an Ocean Science and Technology Camp for high school students.

The weeklong day camp delivers an ocean science career-focused experience. Participants will meet Dr. Leila Hamdan’s team researching deep-sea microbiology on shipwrecks to provide a view into the life of marine scientists and engineers. Camp participants are part of the pre-voyage activities when they tour the R/V Point Sur and the USM Marine Research Center to meet the scientific team and see first-hand the staging activities and equipment preparations required for the research trip.

Students will learn about the expedition’s ROV Odysseus from Pelagic Research Services. During the expedition, Dr. Hamdan will share research activities and findings and answer questions using live-video conferencing technology aboard the R/V Point Sur.  Students then board USM’s R/V Jim Franksfor their own scientific cruise in the Gulf of Mexico to collect a variety of scientific data using hydrophones, cameras, plankton tows and deploy a USM Glider. During the week, students will also visit USM Department of Marine Science at the John C. Stennis Space Center site, tour NOAA Data Buoy Center and build and test Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in the USM’s ROV testing pool.
