Ocean Science and Technology Camp

Due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) global health crisis, the Marine Education Center, by following policies set by The University of Southern Mississippi, is canceling all person-to-person educational programming through August 2020 including our summer camps. The University remains open, and our team at the MEC will use this time of disruption to conceive and execute innovative on-line programs that continue our mission of education and outreach for USM's School of Ocean Science and Engineering.

The University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Ocean Science and Engineering is offering an Ocean Science and Technology Camp for high school students.

The weeklong day camp delivers an ocean science career-focused experience.

Students will learn about the expedition’s ROV Odysseus from Pelagic Research Services. Students then board USM’s R/V Jim Franks for their own scientific cruise in the Gulf of Mexico to collect a variety of scientific data using hydrophones, cameras, plankton tows and deploy a USM Glider. During the week, students will also visit USM Department of Marine Science at the John C. Stennis Space Center site, tour NOAA Data Buoy Center and build and test Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in the USM’s ROV testing pool.
